Genelia D'Souza is an Indian actress who made her debut as a Bollywood actress in 2003.
Early Life
Genelia D'Souza was born to Jeanette D'Souza, formerly a Managing Director with a pharma MNC, and Neil D'Souza, a senior official with Tata Consultancy Services on August 5, 1987.
Genelia’s family is a member of the Mangalorean Christian community, which is a prominent Christian community in Mumbai (Bombay).
Genelia completed high school and later attended St. Andrews College in Bandra to pursue her Bachelor's Degree of Management Studies. Genelia was a National level football player and State level athlete.
Film Career
Genelia made her debut as a Bollywood actress in 2003 as a teenager in the Hindi film “Tujhe Meri Kasam”. She also starred in the Tamil movie “Boys” and the Telugu movie “Satyam”. “Tujhe Meri Kasam” was met with average response at the box office but “Boys” and “Satyam” were both big box office hits. Genelia starred in several Telugu movies over the next 3 years such as “Samba”, ”Subash Chandra Bose”, and “Sye” which cemented her place as a hot celebrity in India.
Genelia received critical acclaim for her role in “Bommarillu” in 2006 including several awards -- Nandi Special Jury Award, Telugu Filmfare Award for Best Actress, and Santosham Award for Best Actress. The movie was remade in Tamil as “Santosh Subramaniam” in 2008.
Return to Bollywood
Genelia had spent most of her time acting in movies outside of Bollywood but in 2008 found her trying to establish herself as a Bollywood actress again. She performed in Priyadarshan’s “Mere Baap Pehle Aap” and the hugely popular “Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na”. Genelia’s role as Meow was widely recognized and Genelia was praised for her skill as an actress. “Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na” was her Bollywood breakout role and turned her into a Bollywood celebrity.
With her place as a Bollywood actress secure, Genelia has several movies planned for 2009. One of the most talked about is “It’s My Life”, which is a remake of “Bommarillu.” This role will make history as Genelia will portray the same character in 3 different languages.
